New Zealand are the OFC's guaranteed representatives โ and for good reason. Their qualification, via a dominant third-round OFC competition, was professional and controlled. This is just their third World Cup appearance ever.
The All Whites are under no illusions about the challenge of Group G. Belgium, Iran, and Egypt represent three very different but formidable opponents. But Chris Wood's goals have propelled New Zealand to wins over much higher-ranked opposition before.
Key Player: Chris Wood
The Nottingham Forest striker is New Zealand's all-time leading goalscorer and their talisman. His ability to lead the line, win aerial duels, and finish from distance gives the All Whites a reliable focal point. Wood's Premier League experience is invaluable at this level.
Tactical Setup
Bazeley's 4-4-2 is organised and physical. New Zealand work hard collectively, defend compactly, and look to exploit crosses and set pieces through Wood. Against technically superior sides they will need to limit space effectively.
Tournament History
Two prior appearances: 1982 (three losses) and 2010 (famous unbeaten record โ three draws including against Italy). New Zealand's tournament football always punches beyond their ranking.
